Somewhere between Billings and Missoula, my GPS stopped.
Not because the road was complicated — US-93 through Montana is about as straightforward as highways get, a long straight line through some of the most spectacular scenery in North America. It stopped because I had no signal. Not a weak signal. Not one bar. Nothing.
I had been driving for four hours. The next town was forty-something miles ahead. My downloaded offline maps covered the interstate but not the ranch road I had turned onto twenty minutes earlier following a hand-painted sign for a viewpoint that someone at the previous night’s motel had recommended.
I found my way back to the highway eventually, by memory and instinct and a lot of backtracking. But the experience crystallised something I had been vaguely aware of since starting the road trip: American connectivity is nothing like European connectivity, and road tripping specifically amplifies every gap in your data plan in ways that city travel does not.

All of these scenarios — ordinary road trip moments — require data that works in places where data is not always guaranteed.
The American Coverage Reality Nobody Explains Clearly
The United States is not uniformly covered by any single mobile network. This surprises people who assume a country with this level of infrastructure investment would have comprehensive coverage everywhere.
It does not. And for road trippers specifically, the gaps matter.
The three main networks — AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile — each have strong coverage in cities and along major interstate corridors. They diverge significantly in rural areas, mountain terrain, and the vast stretches of the American interior that sit between population centres.
T-Mobile delivers the fastest speeds and most competitive pricing in urban environments. In cities like Seattle, Portland, Denver, and Chicago, T-Mobile’s 5G performance is genuinely impressive. Once you leave those urban corridors, T-Mobile’s coverage map thins noticeably. For a road trip that stays on major interstates between large cities, it is adequate. For anything that ventures off those corridors — forest roads, ranch country, mountain passes, remote national park areas — the gaps become more frequent.
AT&T covers more of rural America than T-Mobile and performs more consistently across the interstate highway system as a whole. For road trippers whose routes include long stretches between cities across the Midwest, the South, and the interior West, AT&T tends to maintain signal further into remote areas.
Verizon is the network that matters most for road trips that include national parks and genuine wilderness. Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, Zion, the Rockies — in these environments, Verizon’s infrastructure reach extends further than the other two networks. Travellers who have driven through remote Wyoming on AT&T and then switched to Verizon have reported the difference as significant.
For international travellers on road trips, the practical implication is straightforward: the network that served you well in the city where you started is not necessarily the network that serves you well across 3,000 miles of varied American terrain.
What Actually Works for Road Trip Connectivity
International roaming through your home carrier
If you are travelling to the USA from abroad, your home carrier’s international roaming rates apply from the moment you land. For short city visits, daily roaming fees in the $8 to $15 range are inconvenient but manageable. For a three-week road trip, the cumulative cost becomes genuinely significant — and the network your home carrier roams through may not be the network that provides best coverage along your specific route.
Prepaid US SIM card
Available at airports, carrier stores, and major retail chains throughout the country. Prepaid plans from US carriers offer significantly better rates than international roaming for extended stays, and you can specifically choose the carrier whose coverage best matches your planned route.
The practical considerations for road trippers: you activate the SIM in your first city and your home number goes dark for the duration of the trip. Authentication codes from home services, calls from family, any two-factor authentication on accounts you need to access — all of these require your home number. Managing without it for three weeks is possible, but worth considering before you swap cards.
Travel eSIM with dual US network access
This is the approach I use for US road trips now, and the one that most directly addresses the coverage problem that Montana surfaced.
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your smartphone. You purchase a US data plan before you travel, install it at home, and your phone connects to American networks the moment you land. Your home SIM stays in your phone — your regular number active, your home contacts able to reach you normally. The eSIM handles data as a completely separate line.

Road trips consume data differently from city trips. The calculation is worth doing before purchasing a plan.
Navigation: On a road trip, navigation runs almost continuously during driving hours. Google Maps with live traffic, rerouting around road closures, finding gas stations and rest stops in real time — all of it requires live data. This is the category most road trippers underestimate. A full driving day can consume 1 to 2GB from navigation alone.
Accommodation booking: Road trips often involve booking accommodation a day or two ahead rather than months in advance. Daily searches, comparison between options, booking confirmation — this requires live data and adds meaningfully to daily consumption.
National park permits and timed entries: Many popular national parks now require timed entry reservations that must be accessed and displayed digitally at the gate. Yellowstone, Arches, Rocky Mountain, Glacier — all have timed entry systems that require connectivity to access at entry points where WiFi is not available.
Weather: Route planning around weather in mountain terrain or across plains prone to severe storms requires live weather data updated frequently, not a forecast you checked before leaving the motel.
Gas station research: In remote areas, knowing which gas stations are open, which have diesel, and how far the next one is requires live data. This sounds trivial until you are watching the fuel gauge on a rural Nevada highway at 6pm.
Realistic data consumption for a full road trip day: 2 to 4GB. For a three-week road trip, that is 42 to 84GB of total consumption — significantly more than most travellers plan for.
Practical recommendation: for a two-week road trip, the 20GB plan provides adequate coverage for moderate users. For three weeks or more, or for routes through genuinely remote territory, the 50GB plan eliminates the risk of running short mid-trip in an area where purchasing additional data is not straightforward.
The Offline Preparation That Matters Most
Even with the best eSIM plan, some stretches of American road trip territory will have reduced or no signal. Preparation before going remote makes those stretches manageable rather than stressful.
Download Google Maps offline for your entire route before each day’s drive. The GPS function in your phone uses satellites rather than network data — it works without signal. A downloaded offline map means navigation continues even when data does not.
Save your accommodation details offline. Address, check-in instructions, any gate codes or access information — all saved as a screenshot or in a notes app rather than only accessible via a booking platform that requires live connectivity.
Download weather information before remote sections. A weather app check and screenshot before driving into mountain terrain gives you the forecast you need without requiring live data on the pass.
Know where the next gas station is before you need it. In remote areas, search for gas stations along your planned route while you have signal and note the next two or three. In parts of Nevada and Montana, the gaps between open stations can exceed 50 miles.
