The tent sites are located along a winding trail by the river in a wooded area. These large sites have a fire pit and most have a raised tent pad. (Cars cannot park by these sites.) There are flat tent sites that are easily accessible by car and have a flat tent pad next to the woods in a more open setting.
The Northern Lights Campground is about one mile from the Republic Park with a sandy swimming beach, a boat launch for the Michigamme River, and a playground for the children. Great fishing, boating, and kayaking on the Michigamme River.
You might want to see the remains of the open pit Republic Iron Mine, located about 1/2 mile south of the campground at the yellow fence. There is an opening that leads to the observation point and signs that tell the story of iron mining in the area.
The West Trailhead for the Iron Ore Heritage Trail is located a few yards east of the campground at the Heritage Garden. The trail is open for biking, hiking, running, walking, bird watching, ORVing, cross-country skiing, or snowmobiling. The trail all the way to the east side of Marquette, through some very interesting remains of the iron mines in the area.
The lovely Heritage Garden overlooks School Lake and has benches for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors.
