Chipmunk Rapids Campground

nicolet national forest upper peninsula of mi near iron mountain

Chipmunk Rapids is a small campground which offers a great deal. Florence County has two federally designated Wild Rivers, the Pine and the Popple. Chipmunk Rapids is the only national forest campground on the Pine River. Enjoy this. You will cross a wooden bridge, just before you reach the campground. The bridge is new and will cause you no problems.

The area is popular for trout fishing, with a variety of other fish species in nearby lakes. A carry-in canoe access is nearby and is a popular starting and ending point for canoe trips. A one-mile trail connects this campground with Lost Lake Campground. The south trailhead of the Lauterman Lake National Recreation Trail is located north of the river.

This particular campground is rarely visited. If you want solitude, but also want to be able to drive up to your campsite - this is the place for you. These campsites are designed primarily for tents, but popups and small trailers will fit. At the picnic area there is an artesian well which flows all year. Chipmunk Rapids Campground is open from May through mid-October.

Chipmunk Rapids Campground is 18 miles southwest of Florence WI. Take Highway 70 to Highway 139. Turn south on 139 for a short drive to Forest Road 2450. Follow 2450 until you see the sign for Chipmunk Rapids at the intersection of Forest Road 2450 and Forest Road 2156.
