Museums are on the grounds and many have gift shops. The federal government has deeded over some of the automated lighthouses to the Michigan DNR. Local groups and historical societies work in cooperation with the DNR to maintain these structures. Funds for maintenance come from Federal and State grants, private donations, fundraisers, memorials and gift shop and book sales. Restoration is done, in part, by dedicated volunteers.
These groups welcome tourists and hope that you will leave a small contribution for lighthouse maintenance.
