Many years ago when the Northwestern Railroad extended
their tracks west to the iron mines in Florence and
Commonwealth, the train brought people from Iron Mountain to
enjoy the beautiful lakes in the Spread Eagle area.
Private cottages and camps sprang up around
the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes, Lake Elwood,
Spring Lake, Lake Anna, and Cosgrove Lake as well
as along the Menominee River that separates
Wisconsin from the Upper Peninsula.
